چکیده

Future sea-level rise will have significant impacts on populations living in costal regions, and the development of coastal infrastructure. Adaptation to these changes to minimize the negative consequences requires improved sea-level rise predictions. While there are several contributors to changes in sea level, future changes in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets are perhaps the least understood. Accurately mapping the bed topography will contribute greatly to improving predictive ice-sheet models. This makes the accurate sounding of polar ice of paramount importance to predicting sea level rise. One tool for mapping bedrock is the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) processing. One variable aspect of SAR processing is choosing an effective beamwidth over which to process. This is of special concern when data is acquired from a high-altitude airborne platform where the radar has a very large footprint on the ground.

Azimuth Beam Pattern Synthesis for Air- Borne Sar System Optimization

Abstract—The limitation of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of an airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is not a serious problem to obtain high azimuth resolution and wide swath imaging compared with a spaceborne SAR system. Hence, continuous high azimuth resolution imagery over a wide area can be obtained using an antenna having a wide beamwidth. Since a small antenna with a large...

SAR Processing of Radar Echo Sounder Data

In 1991, NASA initiated a research program for testing airborne laser and radar altimeters for measuring surface elevation of the Greenland ice sheet in conjunction with a coordinated set of surface measurements for validating and interpreting satellite data sets. In 1993, the airborne program was expanded to include the University of Kansas airborne radio echo sounder for acquiring ice thickne...

Focused synthetic aperture radar processing of ice-sounder data collected over the Greenland ice sheet

We developed a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing algorithm for airborne/spaceborne ice-sounding radar systems and applied it to data collected in Greenland. By using focused SAR (phase-corrected coherent averaging), we improved along-track resolution by a factor of four and provided a 6-dB processing gain over unfocused SAR (coherent averaging without phase correction) based on a point-...

Surface Clutter Suppression Techniques Applied to P-band Multi-Channel SAR Ice Sounder Data from East Antarctica

Radar ice sounding allows for the retrieval of ice depth and provides information on basal topography, basal conditions, flow, and layering. In the prospect of a possible future satellite ice sounding mission, surface clutters are expected to severely hamper measurement of radar echoes from the depth due to the unfavourable observation geometry. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing enables...

Ultra-wideband SAR interferometry

We introduce ultra-wideband synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry as a new technique for topographic height retrieval. It is based on using a SAR system with large relative bandwidth that acquires data along two parallel tracks with a separation of the same order of magnitude as the flight altitude. The complex SAR image data are resampled onto a common reference surface, filtered, and ...
